Team India Appoints Gautam Gambhir as New Head Coach, Succeeding Rahul Dravid

For Gautam Gambhir, who has served as the mentor for LSG in 2022 and 2023, and KKR in 2024, this marks his first assignment as a coach. He has never previously coached a national, domestic, or IPL side.

Gautam Gambhir Takes Helm of Indian Cricket Team

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah: “Modern-Day Cricket Has Evolved Rapidly, And Gautam Has Witnessed This Changing Landscape Up Close.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach. He succeeds Rahul Dravid, whose three-year tenure concluded with India’s victorious campaign in the T20 World Cup in June. Dravid, who took over from Ravi Shastri in 2021, saw his term extended until the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the US and West Indies.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced the appointment on social media platform X, stating, “Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward.”

Gautam Gambhir is expected to serve as head coach until the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, though an official announcement on his tenure is still awaited. His first assignment as India coach will be the Sri Lanka tour, beginning on July 27. The schedule for the bilateral series is yet to be announced.

Gautam Gambhir’s Coaching Experience

Interestingly, Gambhir, who served as mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022 and 2023, has never coached a side at any level. In 2024, he returned as mentor to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he had previously won two IPL trophies, upon the request of co-owner Shah Rukh Khan. Under his mentorship, KKR won the IPL 2024 cup, showcasing aggressive cricket.

Despite not holding a formal coaching role, Gambhir has always been a central figure with his aggressive approach from the sidelines. He was notably involved in an altercation between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq during an RCB vs. LSG match in IPL 2023.
