Nigel Farage’s candidacy has significantly boosted support for his hard-right Reform UK party. Running on a platform that emphasizes pro-Brexit, anti-immigration, and anti-net zero policies, the party threatens to siphon right-wing support from the Conservatives.

Nigel Farage: Could ‘Mr. Brexit’ Finally Succeed on His Eighth Election Attempt?

Nigel Farage, aiming to become a British MP on his eighth try, has evolved from a fringe Eurosceptic activist to a prominent figure aiming to reshape right-wing UK politics. The 60-year-old ex-European parliamentarian was pivotal in the 2016 Brexit vote and later became a presenter on the right-wing channel GB News. Farage led the Brexit Party to a significant win in the 2019 European Parliament elections, increasing pressure on the UK government to finalize Brexit.

A fervent supporter of Donald Trump, who nicknamed him “Mr. Brexit,” Farage is a polarizing figure with a reputation for effective communication and campaigning. His decision to run in Clacton, a Eurosceptic seat in southeast England, poses a substantial threat to the ruling Conservatives. His candidacy has bolstered support for Reform UK, which advocates for Brexit, anti-immigration policies, and an anti-net zero stance, potentially diverting right-wing votes from the Tories. This could benefit the Labour opposition, which is predicted to win by a large margin.

Farage’s long-term goal is to transform the Conservative Party, likening his efforts to the 1990s Conservative Party reforms in Canada. He aims to reshape the centre-right but first needs to win a seat in Parliament after seven failed attempts.

Early Life and Career

Nigel Paul Farage was born on April 3, 1964, in Farnborough, Kent, England, and educated at Dulwich College in London. Before politics, he worked in commodities trading. Farage co-founded UKIP in 1993 to campaign for the UK’s exit from the EU, serving as a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 until the UK left the EU in 2020. Known for his outspoken style, he frequently criticized EU institutions.

Farage’s Public Image

Farage, a beer-loving divorced father of four, paradoxically embodies traits he often criticizes. Despite his privileged background and lengthy tenure as an MEP in Brussels, he portrays himself as a straightforward, pint-drinking “everyman.” However, opponents view him as hypocritical and accuse him of pandering to far-right ideologies.

Reform UK has faced controversy, dismissing several candidates over offensive remarks. Farage himself was criticized for suggesting that the West provoked Russia’s war in Ukraine. Despite these issues, he continues to capture media attention, appealing to right-wing voters frustrated with Brexit’s handling.

Personal Challenges and Political Ascendancy

Farage has overcome significant personal challenges, including a bout with cancer and a serious car accident in the 1980s. He married his nurse, and they had two sons before divorcing in 1997. He later married Kirsten Mehr, a German national, with whom he has two daughters; they separated in 2017. In 2010, Farage survived a plane crash on election day.

Farage’s political career took off in 1993 when he left the Conservatives to co-found UKIP. He became an MEP at 35 and led UKIP to an unprecedented victory in the 2014 European Parliament elections, pressuring then-Prime Minister David Cameron to call the EU referendum. Although sidelined from the official “Leave” campaign, Farage maintained visibility, particularly on immigration issues.

After the Brexit vote, Farage stepped down as UKIP leader but soon returned to politics, founding the Brexit Party to address Brexit-related political gridlock. Following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, he rebranded the party as Reform UK.
